About the Winery: This historic estate on Mt. Etna produces some of the best Nerello Mascalese in the region. Calabretta's most distinguishing feature is their dedication to long aging, producing majestic wines that are released only after years in the cellar. The vineyards are planted between 300 and 900 meters on the slopes of Mt. Etna and most of the vines are 80 years old, with a good portion ungrafted. The soils are a combination of black volcanic ash and sand, with lots of lava rocks and good drainage. Massimillano Calabretta only releases his wines after long aging, often releasing six to eight years behind other Etna producers.
Winemaker's Tasting Notes: The color is ruby red, almost garnet from the aging. On the nose, it is intense, persistent and ethereal with a hint of vanilla, while also earthy. The flavor is mineral and austere with balanced tannins, creating a silky finish. The high acidity gives it the ability to age.
Varietal: Nerello Mascalese.
